1/3/2022

Picture

Since its National Library lovers month, here is our top 5 book recommendations for you!

(1) Deep Work by Cal Newport
Do you find it difficult to concentrate? Then this is a book you must read. Cal Newport talks about the most common challenge we all have: 'trying to focus'! This book goes into great length about how we may overcome our need to constantly check our social media or engage in any activity that takes our attention away from our goal. So, if this seems fascinating to you, go ahead and read it; it's widely available in libraries and can also be purchased on Amazon.

Picture

(2) Getting from college to Career by Lindsey Pollak
Whether you're in the transition stage of your life where you are now looking for work outside your studies or simply want to improve your job prospects. Lindsey Pollak explains career skills in deeper depth, including how to find a job, how to stand out from the crowd, and basically all the abilities you'll need to practise in order to land your dream job! If you're interested in reading it, you can find it at libraries or order it from Amazon.

Picture

(3) The power of Habits by Charles Duhigg
This is a book I recommend to everyone since habits shape so much of our behaviour; we all have good and bad habits, and we all know we need to break the negative ones! The concepts and suggestions in this book by Charles Duhigg will actually help you break the habits that are holding you back, allowing you to be the best version of yourself and perform better in all aspects of your life! So, check it out on Amazon.
Picture

(4) Spark by John Ratey
Too often, as students, we get caught up in a pile of unfinished work, forgetting about our physical body and health. John Ratey goes into great explanation on how your brain works, which is fascinating, as well as the scientific explanation of how exercise affects your learning style and how it might help you learn more effectively. So get your gear ready and get some exercise, but don't forget to look up this book on Amazon or at your local library!
Picture

(5) The Happiness equation by Neil Pasricha
Does reaching that milestone truly make you happy? This is something Neil Pasricha discusses throughout the book, since we are all striving to find ways and reasons to be happy in this world in some way or another. We all want to be happy, but we must first grasp what it means to be happy within ourselves. I'm confident that this book will assist you in better understanding inner bliss. So go ahead and give it a shot; it's accessible in libraries or you can order a copy from Amazon.

Picture

Create a study plan
It is so important to have a plan to better focus when you start studying, especially when it's studying new material. Therefore, creating a study plan or a ‘to-do’ list can be very helpful!.

Picture

Maintain a positive attitude/outlook while learning
it is very important  to start something on a positive note, it's the same when learning something new! That’s why look at the benefits it will give you when you learn that skill etc.

Picture

Maintain Hand written notes

Since there are various types of learners, this is more for Kinesthetic learners. But if you’re unsure on what type of learner you are, why not give it a go and see if it works for you!

State what you want to remember out loud

This can be funny if someone overhears you! But, this can be very useful to some, such as for auditory learners. Trust me and give it a go.

It is very important to test your understanding on new materials that you have learnt so take tests regularly to see if you fully understand the material or not. Also, it's an opportunity to see where you can improve.
